The Epilepsy Research Centre (previously known as the Epilepsy Research Institute) comprises a number of research teams from the University of Melbourne, the Brain Research Institute and Austin Health working together to better understand the causes and treatment of epilepsy. Research areas at the ERC include:

  • Genetics of Epilepsy: Clinical and molecular genetic studies of epilepsy genetics utilizing families, twins and sporadic cases regarding epilepsy causation and pharmacogenetics.
  • First Seizure Clinic: Research on the epileptology, genetics, clinical and psychological outcome of new onset epilepsy.
  • Neurocognitive: Research on the relationship between epileptogenic pathology and cognitive function.
  • Clinical Trials: Conducts properly supervised clinical trials of new medications, medical devices and the ketogenic diet to treat epilepsy.
  • Surgical Treatment and Outcome: Research into pre-operative evaluation, medical and psychosocial outcome of epilepsy surgery.
  • Neurosciences Centre of Clinical Research Excellence: Multi-disciplinary clinical research model focusing on producing innovative patient-centred research, training and education into epilepsy, stroke and other neurological disorders.
  • Neuroimaging of Epilepsy at the Brain Research Institute: Research to help understand the structure and function of the human brain.
